Who is PetRescue?

Hi! *waves* We've started a blog as a bit of an informal way to let you know about happenings here at PetRescue. Firstly, I'd like to introduce us! We're only small (though we try quite hard to seem big) - a team of just three. We work from our respective digs, meeting once a year for a powwow and a game of “pub rules” pool. Most Wednesdays we teleconference (read gasbag) and decide what we'll do for the next week. We all have full-time jobs tho, so we're always trying to get everything we want to achieve done while still like, you know... having a life :D Me = Shel Official title: Top Dog :)

I started PetRescue with JB in 2004. Aquarius. I'm presently working in the CBD, but dream of once day being able to take my dog to work. Enjoy dog beaches and COFFEE! (helps on those late nights on the computer). Desperately allergic to cats but love and cuddle them anyway (antihistamine is your friend) and am always picking up dogs off the side of the road at inappropriate moments like weddings… funerals. The biggest geek you'll ever meet but despite this still functions quite well as a member of society :) Runs Alternative IT in Perth when we're not bugging him for new site features. Total music nut, caffeine-aholic and wannabe surfer. Cross-eyed cat owner (the cat, not JB) . Recently shaved his head and now looks like one of the guys off Prison Break. Legend. Is the coolest person on the planet (tho she wouldn't agree). Lives in Qld and like shel has three dogs. Vix recently came on board as the face of PetRescue as she has a really nice one. She also has extensive experience in marketing and schmoozing and has done a fantastic job of making us look good. She can also balance a pen on her nose for a full minute. She is very smart. We're all volunteers and we all are trying our hardest to make this thing work! So welcome to the fantastic, exciting world that is PetRescue - we hope you'll join us :)

A PetRescue adoption... via PetRescue!

So we decided it was time for a new family member. The house just isn't the same without animals... and while we'd love a dog, our lives are a little too full for that level of commitment. So... time for a kitten...? As a strictly dog-only kinda guy, I was sceptical. You know how it is - most people are either dog people or cat people; and as animal-friendly as I am, a week ago I would have firmly placed myself in the former category. But my girlfriend, Pip, a long-time cat fancier (and, as it turns out, kitty toilet-trainer extraordinaire!) talked me around - a cat would suit our busy lifestyle and rental property animal restrictions while still letting us have the pet we wanted so much. So - off to the PetRescue site we went! - or rather Pip went, bombarding me with cute animal emails while I was at work ;) We found a little guy - Chuckie - up for adoption at the wonderful Balcatta Veterinary Hospital. He'd been hit by a car at around 3 months old, and sustained some nasty head injuries. One of the nurses had been caring for him until he was fully healed - and that's when we met him :) The staff at Balcatta Vet were fantastic - we got to play with Chuckie in the adoption room for about half an hour (most of which was spent watching the little terror staking out the fish tank strategically placed in the room!), which gave us a chance to get to know him and make sure he would suit our home. After his desexing op the next day, and a head scan (would that be a 'cat scan'?) to make sure his brain box was fine, we took Chuckie home.

A week later, he's acclimatised beautifully - happily attacking pizza boxes, shoelaces, socks and anything else that moves. He's found his favourite places to hide and sleep - any window ledge is now his by default, and hiding inside the coffee table and peeking out is a favourite ;) Toilet training was a dream - kittens are so much easier than puppies in that regard! The only remaining sign of his accident is his slightly wonky eyes - oh, and he does fall off the back of the couch sometimes... but I reckon all kittens probably do that ;) Another successful adoption, thanks to PetRescue - we couldn't be happier!

What are we up to?

We get together once a week to discuss what we'd like to do with the site - Vix Skypes in from QLD and we work through a list of things we've been doing. This week the big news is Vix's trip to Melbourne to attend a grant application seminar - we've never had money to spend (and we all work full time to support this 'hobby') so the concept we might be able to get some $$ to put some of our ideas into motion is pretty exciting! Our priority is definitely to get a stall and some flyers made so we can get out and about and promote PetRescue, and a poster to send to vets. And I'd like a PetRescue t-shirt... I've always wanted one :) Guess what else? Tattoos. Seriously. We're all going to get the little PetRescue dog tattoo'ed on us - if anyone knows about hand tattoos and whether they're a good idea, we'd be glad to hear from you! (we want to get it where people ask us about it all the time!) I got to tell the others about my weekend; I collected a kelpie pup that was due to be killed from the pound - so rewarding! I had a friend who was going to foster for me, who has since completely fallen in love, named the pup Beans and decided that she has to stay permanently. Sometimes things are meant to be :)

PetRescue is the best job I've ever had because...

From an email from Vix to Jb & I this morning... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It goes with out saying we love da animals, but PetRescue is the best because: - We work with our mates - We can say *swear word removed* any time we want - We don't get fired if we don't get something done (which actually makes us work harder and better) - We have no boundaries in ideas - We feel completely comfortable in using 'petrescuerox' and 'PetRescuestillrox' as our official trademark application reference ID - We never do stuff we don't like or believe in - Our AGM involves several games of pub rules pool - Lots of warm fuzzies from people sending pics of their adopted animals - We can take our pets/girlfriends/boyfriends/friends/family to work - Getting a PetRescue tattoo is a WIP task - We have absolutely no doubt it will be huge!

.... and now I have to go and do some paid work! x Vix -----------------------------------------------------------------------
